Second-rate soap opera, Ida Lupino is wasted here.

Not quite as good as "The Man I Love" but Ida offers her usual superior performance, if a stronger actress with more musical talent than Joan Leslie, Judy Garland would have been ideal, had played the other sister this would have been a better film. Gladys George steals her too few scenes.

A very classical melodrama of the "scheming stage mother" variety, only with sisters this time around instead of the usual maternal shenanigans. Much of the plot is expected, so even though you probably haven't seen this movie before you've almost certainly seen pieces of the story elsewhere. But it's a mostly well executed take on the formula, and it's nice to see some less familiar faces really act the hell out of the material. Jack Carson was often typecast as the ham, which he does here to good effect, but he's surprisingly convincing at playing wounded as well.

And Lupino is an interesting presence, very good in a role that's less showy than you might expect; she really tears into those first few scenes, but then takes sort of a backseat for much of the film, with lots of lurking and icy glares rather than big monologues. It's an effective way to build the character as the intense manipulator she needs to be without making her into a complete villain, but it's this same decision that made the second half of the film a little too sour for me. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that when it comes time for the inevitable moralizing and the various endings for the different characters, I don't think everyone really deserved what they got.

lupino is great as the devious, aggressove helen chernin, a woman that will not stop until her baby sister kitty (joan leslie) is a stage star.
