Movie Info

One of the most memorable characters in the history of literature is that of Sherlock Holmes. The sleuth made famous by the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is so real that many people do not know that he is a character of fiction. The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his loyal assistant Dr. Watson have been immortalized in numerous films. This documentary, featuring Basil Rathbone and Christopher Lee, use archival film clips to illustrate some of the many faces of the world's best- known detective. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, Rovi

Audience Reviews for The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes

A fun, very informative history of the master detective. Christopher Lee hosts and narrates this fantastic look back of every stage and screen person known to be Sherlock Holmes. As seen on PBS. SEE the entire film here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fefxO6W06aU An overview of Sherlock Holmes as Arthur Conan Doyle wrote of him, as portrayed on the stage, on radio, television, and in the motion pictures by dozens of actors from 1900 to 1985. We get to see what has become of 221b Baker Street. It is now a bank. But still, there is lots and lots of film footage covering years of cases created by Doyle. It seems Sir Arthur Conan Doyle early on wanted nothing to do with the character Holmes (named after American Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendall Holmes, of which Doyle was a huge admirer). Of course, the PBS actor and Holmes great Jeremy Brett had not come along in time to be part of the history in this fascinating documentary. An exceptionally well documented history of the detective, with lots of interesting detail not typically known by even the most ardent fans. In the early stories he was determined to see his creation killed, which in fact happened, only to see the character come back. 2 The legendary actor Basil Rathbone was initially grateful to have been chosen to play the great detective, but later in his career admitted otherwise.
