Audience Reviews for Sherlock Holmes: The Archive Collection
What an oddball bit of silent cinema. There are three main locations: Coke Ennyday's place, a weird little beach, and a crime-infested laundry. The bookending locations make some sense and don't feel random as hell. But the beach location is a surreal bit of film. As a parody (of Sherlock Holmes, and I would have said Hercule Poirot, except this movie predates the Agatha Christie detective) the tone is utterly irreverent. It hardly bothers with things like plot or character development. In fact, most of the movie is Ennyday's multifaceted interest in cocaine. We watch him plugging needles in his arm, tossing his needles any which way, then twitching his moustache with his hand and acting all giddy-like. In a longer movie this would get tedious, but it's a joke that holds up for almost the entire length of the movie.
A very zany, funny, ridiculous movie starring Fairbanks as a cocaine addict scientist detective. It has a fantastic funny ending too, I really enjoyed it.
