The Outsider Photos

Movie Info

Ira Hayes was a Pima Indian who left the reservation to join the United States Marine Corps. At the battle of Iwo Jima, Hayes and company were photographed planting the American flag on top of Mt. Suribachi. The event was snapped by a photographer who captured the moment after a bloody battle against the Japanese enemy. The picture served as a model for the Mt. Suribachi Memorial sculpture in Washington, D.C. The film takes certain liberties with historical accuracy with Hayes (Tony Curtis) dying ten years later from alcoholism. This version would have the viewer believe his troubles with the bottle were brought on by the death of Marine buddy Sorenson (James Franciscus).
