Nick Tomnay's The Perfect Host manages to take a rather simple premise and do something rather inventive and refreshing with it.

The plot isn't believable, but it sure is fun. It skewers expectations and has a lot of unexpected turns.

The Perfect Host is a welcome sherbet between the many more weighty films currently playing.

Suffers for being too clever and convoluted despite being so witty.

The Perfect Host is a prime example of why you don't need an insane effects budget or huge set pieces to give audiences a cinematic experience they won't soon forget.

Crawford radiates charisma, and Pierce sells even the nuttiest moments.

The less one knows about this perverse thriller from debuting director Nick Tomnay the better; a full appreciation of its delights lies in its revelations.

Clayne Crawford and John Malkovich-like David Hyde Pierce are excellent screen sparring partners in 'The Perfect Host.'

The dialogue is witty and spiked with delicious malice. At least it is when Pierce delivers it. It won't spoil the plot to say that he is pricelessly good at taking you places you don't see coming.

Pierce plays his wacked-out dinner-party host with such gusto that it almost doesn't matter that neither of the main characters are really fleshed out.

The heart of the film is a one-joke fizzler, leaving DHP to sashay, role-play, carry on one-sided conversations, and disco-dance on the table with just the right amount of lizardy, half-lidded sangfroid.

A familiar horror/suspense trope -- criminals choose the wrong hideout, discover twisted residents more dangerous than cops -- gets entertainingly respun in The Perfect Host.

Tomnay skillfully shifts the film's initial tone from suspense to dark comedy so that the transition never feels forced.

So many engaging twists that any attempt at a detailed synopsis would ruin the movie.

This is not the type of movie whose inherent dopiness angers or frustrates. You just sort of giggle at the kids having fun.

It's a film, not a play, and it doesn't work.

The actors give invested performances, but The Perfect Host's story twists reveal it to be a bullsh-t head feint exercise designed from the ground up as merely a collection of goosing scenes.

Around every corner is a new twist, a strategically placed misdirection or another switch of predator and prey. But while the gamesmanship is satisfying in moderation, it becomes a little monotonous in excess.

Though this 'Host' is far from perfect, it does offer incidental pleasures--not least Pierce's exuberant turn.
