... takes primal fear of home invasion to the next level. As in "Crawlspace," you can't lock out the threat because it's inside, and it knows the floor plan better than you.

...a low-rent, hopelessly by-the-numbers thriller that is way, way beneath the talents of its Oscar winning star.

Isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff, but if you're looking for Friday night thrills, The Resident should do the job.

Perhaps, with more suggestion to allow the viewer's mind to wander, the film could have outsmarted others in the genre, rather than resorting to type in places.

So shockingly bad, it is really, extraordinarily good.

Swank is pitch-perfect. Her large teeth were made for chattering, her large jaw for dropping with horror.

Swank is typically credible as a confident yet vulnerable professional woman, and Morgan is subtly convincing as the insinuating Max.

As a critic I had some issues, but as a moviegoer, I was ensconced in every moment. Deft direction (and misdirection), keeps the tension ratchet-tight.

Logic and editing aren't the movie's best friends, but accepted as a modest creep-out with a few semi-salacious touches and The Resident delivers the icks and scares.

The usually strong actors are adrift without a decent script or story, resulting in a film that doesn't live up to the legendary name of the studio

The Resident fails to scare or entertain, and giving Christopher Lee the slightest of roles merely draws attention to how far short it falls short of its studio's heritage.

Swank has the wherewithal to make a panting madman reach for his tape and handcuffs.

Devoid of any believable motivations, Hilary Swank's The Resident trots out gender-based clichés of fear, resulting in a goosing stalker thriller that adds nothing new to the single-woman-in-peril subgenre.

It's a conventional thriller, short on originality and red herrings but atmospherically lit by Guillermo Navarro, who won an Oscar for his cinematography on Pan's Labyrinth.
