Audience Reviews for The Suicide Manual
The film's main failure is that it has no real point of interest. No character is fleshed out enough for us to care, and the events are in full flow as soon as the film gets started. This is a serious attempt to tackle the increasing numbers of suicide in Japan. However, its supernatural and creepy atmosphere puts it far from being taken seriously. The film is also very insular, keeping the focus on a pair of journalists that rarely seem excited to be a part of such a bizarre series of events. Other bits of the film are just filled with "How to kill yourself" segments.
Very uneven story. It kinda goes up and down. It's interesting, then boring, then interesting and now it's boring again. I will give it credit for their portrayal of suicide. They don't sugar coat it or make it seem desirable (like the book did), it's told in a very cold and frank manner. I can't quite recommend this, but it isn't awful.
