Movie Info

Yusef is a first-generation Pakistani-American engineering student who moves off-campus with a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. His new "un-orthodox" housemates soon introduce him to Taqwacore - a hardcore, Muslim punk rock scene. As the seasons change, Taqwacore influences the house more and more. The living room becomes a mosque during the day, while it continues to host punk shows at night. Ultimately, Yusef begins to challenge his own faith and ideologies. A powerful and original story of punk Islam in the USA and the discovery of oneself within the confines of religion. -- (C) Strand

What this rough-around-the-edges but hugely likeable film lacks in budget it more than makes up for in energy, visual flair and, yes, punk spirit.

This earnest adaptation of Michael Muhammad Knight's novel is too busy processing events to fully understand them. But director Eyad Zahra is so enthusiastic that he wins us over anyway.

As a misfit-centric slap at religious conformity, the story's premise couldn't be more primed for trenchant social comedy, but screenwriter Knight and director Eyad Zahra opt for maintaining a thin veneer of tiresome obnoxiousness...

The shaky narrative style and broad characterizations undo its effectiveness, though the climactic concert sequence... will possess an undeniable fascination for wide-ranging music connoisseurs.

The storytelling is so muddled and the filmmaking so unpolished - and not in a good way - that mostly this movie is just unpleasant.

Audience Reviews for The Taqwacores

½

It seems like a contradiction... Muslim and punk. This may be the hardest part of the movie to get past but if yoy like other puck subculture movies I would reccomend this. If you don't see a movie like SLC Punk first.

Well , I guess outcast come in all shapes and sizes and religions . This movie isn't bad . You learn alot through the eyes of these young Muslims . Things they disagree with things they believe and of course the PUNK ROCK Muslim scene . Interesting to say the least

Intermittently interesting drama about a young Muslim engineering student who moves in with a group of fellow young Muslims who are part of an underground Islamic "punk" scene. Takes a look at the different brands and ideologies in modern Islam, but also suffers from a heavy-handed script and one-dimensional characters.
