Movie Info

The passionate tale of Sobran Jodeau, an ambitious young peasant winemaker and the three loves of his life - his beautiful wife Celeste, the proudly intellectual baroness Aurora de Valday and Xas, an angel who strikes up an unlikely but enduring friendship. Under his guidance Sobran is forced to fathom the nature of love and belief and in the process grapples with the sensual, the sacred and the profane - in pursuit of the perfect vintage.

Renier may remind you of a young Michael York. And the photography is gorgeous, in a conventional sort of way.

Exquisite design and radiant performances from two unique talents can't quite overcome the muddled, hollow melodramatics of Niki Caro's The Vintner's Luck.

Audience Reviews for The Vintner's Luck

This is a wonderful film and a sweeping love letter to passion. No boxed wine allowed when sitting down to enjoy this movie. Splurge on a big, fat, earthy red and indulge in both.

The symbolic of wine-making is supposed to be as large as- life. The directing/writing however seem to be more interesting in telling a love quadrilateral story rather than making any philosophical analysis. The problem is even the narrative itself is so flat, plain, slow, lukewarm & sour. Jeremie Renier is good, not great though, as always. Keisha Castle-Hughes & Vera Farmiga are appropriate in their positions too. Gaspard Ulliel is perfect for the outlook of the Angel Xas character- until he speaks with his heavy French accent, flat, low, muttering voice throughout the movie.
