Frankly, "The Amityville Murders" feels like a missed opportunity.
[The] last ten minutes satisfy this requisite as Butch ascends the stairs against flashes of lightning from the rainstorm outside. But the slayings and the sober epilogue that follows make for a flat ending to this relatively ambitious horror movie.
Though the events of 'The Amityville Murders' are grounded in specificity...the plot plays out like a generic haunted-house movie [that] doesn't do anything you haven't seen many times before.
A wheezy and utterly incompetent attempt to further extend the life of a franchise that was already running on fumes back when Ronald Reagan was still a first-term president.
In the end, what's left is yet another bad Amityville movie that fails to entertain or scare. Still, the house does look scary. Maybe if they try one more time...
Surely there are more interesting ways to scare the pants off people.
Filmmakers keep coming back to this murder and its aftermath, but few can find a compelling story to tell. That remains the case here.
The Amityville Murders wastes historical reverence on a paint-by-numbers ghost story that relies too heavily on eyesore animated effects.
