The Batman

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A grim, gritty, and gripping super-noir, The Batman ranks among the Dark Knight's bleakest -- and most thrillingly ambitious -- live-action outings.

Audience Says

It's long, but The Batman looks and sounds great, and its grounded take on Gotham is a solid fit for this Caped Crusader.

Candice Frederick Huffington Post “The Batman” reaches for an ingenious and compelling new way to tell a story about the thin lines between corruption, greed and nobility — but ever so limply and always just out of its grasp. Dec 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Uhlich (All (Parentheses)) The film I imagine Ricky Fitts would grow up to make after the events of 'American Beauty.' Mar 24, 2022 Full Review Liz Shannon Miller Consequence What this film does achieve, however, is telling a solid new Batman story, one with some pretty compelling twists and a strong point-of-view on who, exactly, the Caped Crusader is. By default, that makes it one of the better Batman movies ever made. Mar 19, 2022 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net It’s certainly a better film than any of the Zack Snyder ones. But that’s not exactly a high bar to set. Rated: 3/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Zach Youngs InSession Film This film is beautifully gritty and simply a great detective story. It takes Batman to his roots and acknowledges the silliness of a sad, orphan boy in a rubber suit. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Benjamín Harguindey EscribiendoCine It starts with an original vision of the hero, has an inspired cast, creates a self-sufficient story and elevates it with a stylized direction that's in line with the film's substance. Joaquin C It’s dark, gritty, down to earth, and feels just like as if it was pulled out of a comic book. The opening monologue has to be one of the best openings to any superhero movie. The tone is very depressing and really legitimately shows Gotham as a turned over, crime filled town that NEEDS Batman. The 3 hour runtime doesn’t hurt it in the slightest either. Every scene here is necessary, and there’s pretty much nothing that NEEDS to be cut from the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/24 Full Review First name L The Dark Knight casts a long shadow; Pattinson capably rises to the occasion. It returns to Batman's detective roots, scales back on spectacle for a truly solid Gotham noir. I'd rate it much higher, but it runs a little long and the third act commentary is heavy handed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Thomas G They gave us a detective batman who is still learning and is still flawed. The character development really showed from beginning to end. Can't wait for number 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review John Too Long And Uneventful Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jay Matt Reeves knocks it out the park. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review TomE Started out strong but much like the villain it lost the plot and went fully insane. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
