Movie Info

Ken Burns meets Spinal Tap in a subversive tour de force relaying the outrageous life stories of four forgotten Civil War heroes: an opium-addicted gay colonel, an aging Chinese launderer, a nerdy escaped slave, and a one-armed teenaged prostitute. Both wickedly satirical and deeply affectionate, The Battle of Pussy Willow Creek tells the "100% true" story of how these oddball outsiders saved the Union from a nefarious foreign plot, only to have their stunning victory stricken from the history books. An obvious labor of love, the film successfully comments on gays in the military, racism, xenophobia, and sexism in a sly, entertaining manner throughout.

In some ways, its comic license is no more a betrayal of history than some of the liberties taken by Steven Spielberg and "Lincoln."

Satisfyingly sends up pious History Channel-style treatments of the conflict, gathering steam and inspiration as it progresses.

None of this, unfortunately, is all that funny, although there's daffy charm to some moments.

There are so many ideas and so much imaginative play here that the movie can barely contain them.

Audience Reviews for The Battle of Pussy Willow Creek

This is a film that creeps up on you... Is it real? Is it not? Like Thomas Pynchon BoPWC blends historical fact and fiction into a wonderful, funny tapestry. Wonderful period images or recreated reminiscent of Woody Allen's "Zelig." It doesn't whack you over the head -- this is a thinking person's comedy. Sends up PBS, Ken Burns and history. If you hate pretentious historical documentaries you'll love Battle of Pussy Willow Creek.

This is a wonderful tongue-in-cheek mockumentary. Well written, wonderfully directed and entertaining. Very creative take on the civil war. I highly recommend this movie.

This movie definitely puts things into perspective on how times have changed and not changed since the civil war, while at the same time being just good ol' entertainment!
