In The Beach Bum, the writer-director turns his observational eye and provocateur verve to a Miami community of misfits, who chase bliss in sex, drugs and misadventures.
The Beach Bum works by never losing its tonal statement that all that really matters is what matters to you ... man.
Like Moondog, Korine finds a vulgar poetry in his own self-indulgence.
I, admittedly, had a hard time getting on its woozy wavelength. But The Beach Bum is a work of undeniable commitment and craft...
Such hedonism isn't irredeemable in and of itself, and yet, one wishes Korine were interested in more than just testing boundaries.
The Beach Bum is a skillfully crafted and often hilariously entertaining, but like an evening with Moondog, it might leave you with a hangover.
The Beach Bum is not a terrible movie. The directing is competent, the score is excellent, and the cast is game and hilarious. However, considering who was at the helm, it is not focused enough and winds up with nothing to say.
The time for boring, middle-aged men to succeed at doing nothing, and to be heaped with praise and adoration for it, is over.
While "The Beach Bum" does have the guise of a plot, it isn't entirely concerned with doing all that much with it. Instead, it prefers to flit about, hopping from idea to idea looking for whatever could be the best time.
I understood what Korine was trying to do, and goddamnit, I actually appreciated it. I feel no pride in admitting this, but I enjoyed Beach Bum in spite of itself.
A pretentious, erratic, uninteresting movie that revels in masculinity and hedonism.
The Beach Bum is a fantasy par excellence about life without consequences; a thought exercise in what it would look like if someone truly lived without a care in the world.
