The Big Short (2015)
TOMATOMETER
AUDIENCE SCORE
Critic Consensus: The Big Short approaches a serious, complicated subject with an impressive attention to detail -- and manages to deliver a well-acted, scathingly funny indictment of its real-life villains in the bargain.

McKay cowrote The Big Short's screenplay with Charles Randolph, and they know how to keep an audience engaged, broadcasting this knowledge often, as both parody and indictment.
It's funny because it's true. And it's tragic and frightening for the same reason.

The Big Short is an angry, fiery movie disguised as a comedy.
The Big Short manages to be as enlightening as it is entertaining. But its ominous revelations linger long after it's over.
Thanks to Anchorman (2004) auteur Adam McKay's caustic comedy The Big Short, the events of the great economic meltdown of 2008 are beginning to make sense.
It's an expertly calibrated entertainment, giving the actors room to play and reframing industry jargon as simple, elegant metaphors... And McKay orchestrates it all so deftly that you might not even notice how angry he is - or at least not right away.

Audience Reviews for The Big Short
Hedge fund managers conspire to get rich off of the impending 2008 financial crisis. One of the funniest movies of the year just made me mad - as I suspect was its intention. Exposing the inequities in our financial system and the political machine that supports it, The Big Short fully explains CDOs and other derivatives for the common viewer without talking down to them. While at times the film is heavy-handed (the metonym for the regulatory commissions having heavy sunglasses [she's blind, get it?]) and the film's treatment of women is a little archaic (most of the female characters are "helpers"), when this film is on, it's energetic, insightful, and incredibly well-acted. Overall, if you had trouble understanding what happened in 2008 or on the stock market, try having Margot Robbie explain it to you from a bathtub.

Not as good as Margin Call, but more giddy-enjoyable and quirky with less wooden acting.

Adam McKay does a great job taking a convoluted subject and turning it into a very comprehensible film. All actors do a great job, especially Bale, Carell and Gosling, and the directing is unique with it's cutaways. This film is both funny and fascinating, and while I realize a lot of it is compressed and dramatized, the fact that this is all true (by Hollywood standards, but still this happened to some degree) is stunning.
