The Champion Reviews

It is the beginning and uncompleted ideas of City Lights 1931. There were the same jokes and funny acts but my thought is The Champion is a preview or a warm-up for his Golden Age of filmmaking.

Pretty damn funny after a slightly muddled first 5 mins (it's a short film)

It was an okey film. It was not my favorite Charlie Chaplin film but it had some funny scenes within in.

One of the significantly earlier examples of Charlie Chaplin's talent for slapstick comedy, The Champion is a simple little front for great physical comedy in the context of a sports movie. Charlie Chaplin is the real champion of the story, ensuring that at 30 minutes of silent movie length The Champion is a sufficiently entertaining comedy loaded with the entertaining slapstick and comedic dynamics that make him the iconic comedian he is today. It's a fun venture, moving him from being the sophisticated man in a suit to being an unusually talented boxer. It maintains a classical feel with much of the original vaudeville atmosphere to it, and supplies a good slap of many sticks from the hands of the man himself, Charlie Chaplin.

Just watched a extract, but it was amusing to watch. Funny, in the light Chaplin style.

An amusing short, but not one of Chaplin's best. In this film, he may have laid the groundwork for his classic boxing in "City Lights" though. Still, I have to say check it out.

85% The Tramp is down on his luck, like usual, and tries his hand at boxing to make some money. This gag would be later revisited in City Lights, and it's just as great here. Finally, it's Charlie in top comedic form. Charlie has such an amusing and unique physical presence, that adding boxing to the equation is a formula for hilarity. Man, that was lame. I'm sorry. But it's true. The story isn't the most riveting but it's pretty fun and enjoyable. After a series of lackluster efforts in Keystone, it's a relief to see Charlie let loose and really entertain you every millisecond he appears on screen. The Champion is a hilarious and fun good time. Don't skimp on this one.

Very imaginative and, at times, painstakingly funny.

Un clin d'oeil à The Knockout? En tout cas, pas le meilleur Chaplin!
