A sharply crafted drama that has elements of noirish suspense.
It's impressive that Alami can put all this across - romance, suspense and, in the moving final act, a kind of tragedy - and maintain the movie's nimbleness. But he's a natural storyteller.
What seems a premise for an earnest social-issue drama is darkened and complicated, however, by a progressively noir-ish strain of morally elusive mystery.
A carefully assembled, perceptive slow-burner.
I had to think about "The Charmer" for a while after seeing it, to let it grow on me.
...it is quite the surprise to learn that we've really been watching a psychological thriller of sorts, Esmail wearing so many masks we never see him clearly until the film's final moments.
It would've been easy for The Charmer to tell a simplistic story about an Iranian immigrant... Instead, The Charmer explores Esmail and Sara's differences, presenting a world where his code-switching never stops.
Director and co-writer Milad Alami's film feels like several fused-together trial drafts of the same narrative.
Remarkably adept in balancing audience sympathies and bold in its refusal to choose the most easily justified routes for its characters, The Charmer is a powerful piece of cinema.
It cleverly balances psychological thrills with astute drama, all driven by an engaging central performance by Ardalan Esmaili.
