The Perrons and their five daughters have recently moved into a secluded farmhouse, where a supernatural presence has made itself known. The Conjuring's use of tension, atmosphere, and suggestion prove that the scariest thing to an audience has nothing to do with what you see, but what you don't. Go to Full Review

Wan uses every horror cliche with blithe confidence. He knows no one is immune if the effects are sturdily built, and not too literal. Go to Full Review

The trailer for The Conjuring is scarier than most horror features of recent vintage, and the feature makes good on the promise. Go to Full Review

It's really not much more frightening than, say, The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone or Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, but it's modestly elevated by James Wan's relatively restrained direction. Go to Full Review

As the hellish experience expands and they [the Perrons] genuinely struggle to find hope, these small quirks turn into something far scarier. Go to Full Review

See more Moncha H. @MonchaHelloFIlm 2d [SPOILERS] The Conjuring has that classic old school horror feel, and it mostly works. The characters are pretty dumb at the start, dropping matches in an obviously creepy cellar and ignoring all the warning signs, but somehow the acting still sells it. The stupidity actually makes the scary scenes hit harder, and a few moments caught me off guard. The mom noticing the clocks stuck at the same time was a nice detail, and I liked seeing the old film footage used during the investigation scenes. After the dog dies and the family decides to stay anyway, things escalate fast: bruises, a dead body smell, and other gross stuff start piling up. Once the experts get called in and confirm a dark spirit is haunting the house, the movie leans fully into its scares. The storyline is fine overall, nothing groundbreaking, but the atmosphere and a handful of genuinely scary and gross moments make it worth watching.
