In the end, The Current War really does feel like a product of its past.

Everything, even the most dramatic scenes, stays on the surface. [Full review in spanish]

An interesting and important story told in a lackadaisical fashion.

Cumberbatch and Shannon waste their time in this high-brow re-enactment, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

The film does its best to spark energy and dramatic tension with the score, editing and performances from a superhero-powered cast, but the light bulb moments are few and far between.

The film falls back on the myth of modernity being born in the laps of practical, native-born American ingenuity.

The Current War is a botched screenplay with too many hands in the kitchen. One of TIFF 2017'a biggest duds.
August 6, 2019
For a movie that's supposed to be about invention, progress and the dawn of the future, 'The Current War' is absolutely none of these things.
August 4, 2019
The Current War seems to have suffered from its tumultuous production history. Or, just maybe, it was always destined to be this ungainly.

Too many sub plots (The electric chair! Trade fairs!) and weird dream sequences detect from what should have really lit up the screen (ha!).

There is no getting away from the fact that large stretches of dialogue are taken up with explaining what each inventor was trying to achieve. It takes a particular talent to make electricity generation interesting and such skill is not in evidence here.

Top-hatted, frock-coated, mutton-chopped chaps burbling on about the relative advantages of the alternating current versus direct current system does not, in fact, make for electrifying drama.

The film's release was duly paused and in the two years since there have been reshoots, five new scenes added and ten minutes cut from the original Toronto version. It's still a dirge. It's flat and repetitive.

It's so busily shot, and the camera is always trying to do something...the score can feel intrusive...all of that at once was so distracting, and I was struggling to focus on the dialogue.
July 26, 2019
Given the subject matter, it's a disappointingly unstimulating affair.

So now the film deserves to be considered in its own right, all taint removed. And? It's still a turkey.
