This is the work of someone coming to terms with their past, transmuting the traumas of childhood into the building blocks of adult awareness.

At first the film seems overly stagey, and those with little time for circus acts may find it irritating, but when Jodorowsky hits his surreal stride.

Say this about the godfather of midnight movies, Alejandro Jodorowsky: He loves a parade and he puts on a doozy

A lot of the film doesn't quite click, either as dream imagery or something more conventional. But there's a spirit and a yearning in it that's undeniable and bracing.

The loony-goony visuals are still in play, but there's a sympathy for the audience, a desire to put things to good and even meaningful use.

Audience Reviews for The Dance of Reality

Aug 06, 2013Cult movie legend; Alejandro Jodorowsky's 'The Dance of Reality' directly takes Jodorowsky's native Chile setting and brings it up close examining his childhood and early spiritual understanding as well as what type of person his father was. The Film is for one fascinating, very engaging and self centered. Psychedelia and surreal imagery play a significant parts within the film's substance, at times its hard to distinguish the line between fantasy and reality. I can't really recommend this to you if you aren't very familiar with Jodorowsky's other films; Jodorowsky shows things within his films that even the most repentant or squeamish mind may find uncomfortable to watch. If given the right audience were to view this film they won't be disappointed. This is a film Unlike anything I've ever seen; it has left me Awe Struck, amazed disturbed at the same time. One Thing for certain is Alejandro Jodorowsky is like no other film maker thats ever lived.Luke E Super Reviewer
