Stephen King's epic fantasy saga is brought to the screen as the confounding sci-fi thriller The Dark Tower. The story follows a young boy who's plagued by visions of a man in black and a dark tower and soon discovers that they're real when the Man in Black's henchman come looking for him hoping that he possesses the psychic energy needed to destroy the Dark Tower, thus allowing darkness to consume the universe. Both Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey give solid performances, but the writing is rather poor. The script is actually little more than an outline, doing very little to develop the world or its characters (using tropes as shorthand). Still, the actions scenes are especially well-done and add a lot of energy to the film. And the specially effects and set designs are pretty good, giving the world a distinct look and feel. Yet despite its high production values, The Dark Tower is a formulaic adventure film that's not very compelling.

My hard & fast rule of "Never pay ticket price for anything with Matthew McConaughey in a leading role" has served me well once more, because though one of the biggest problems with The Dark Tower was how they tried to squeeze decades of lore into 95 minute movie, the best part about it was still somehow that it was over pretty quick.

Absolutely horrendous. Has nothing to do with Stephens king books. If you have read the book you will HATE it. So stupid. I don?t understand how Hollywood thinks this is better. This could be as good as lord of the rings or game of thrones with the right leadership. Waste of time and money. Matthew would be perfect for this role if it followed the book. Waste of time.

In an apocalyptic reality, a sorcerer desires to destroy the world so that he can take over everything, yada, yada, yada. The actors do their job in this that feels like a retread, but perhaps the world building involved is too big of a job for one movie, I thought, and better suited to a television series. As it is the work feels rushed and incomplete, however well done.
