The Darkest Minds

Critics Consensus

The Darkest Minds does little to differentiate itself in a crowded field of YA adaptations, leaving all but the least demanding viewers feeling dystopian déjà vu.

  • To say the film suggests a mix of hazy political allegory and Henry Darger's outside-art classic The Story of the Vivian Girls is to make it sound more interesting than it really is.

  • The film is framed so deliberately as a prelude to more exciting times to come in its sequels that it renders the ending oddly anti-climactic.

  • None of it is new, none of it is interesting and the storytelling is tissue-paper thin.

  • In spite of the title, the film doesn't want to take us to too many dark places. In fact, it manages the unlikely feat of making a nightmarish, futuristic world seem a bit like a summer camp.

  • Despite its radical potential, it's disappointing to see this story fall back on what's considered typical teen stuff.

  • The pieces of a potential franchise are put in play here without stakes being raised or pulses quickened.

Really bad, the kind of thing that probably at least would have been commercially succesful about five years ago, but now? Ends up not only a box office lightweight, but also a failure of a story.

In a scene meant to show how self-aware it is, The Darkest Minds instead reiterates just how derivative it is of every other YA-spawned franchise that has come before it and in turn, how mundane it is by comparison. I mean, itï¿ 1/2(TM)s fine. And it proves that sometimes the destination can be better than the journey as the final moments pack more genuine emotion and heart than the entire movie up until that point. So, itï¿ 1/2(TM)s kinda completely whack, but at the same time makes the best of this combination of elements that youï¿ 1/2(TM)ve seen countless times before. I wonï¿ 1/2(TM)t remember it in two weeks, but hey-I was never bored. Take what you can get.
