The Darkest Minds (2018)

Critic Consensus: The Darkest Minds does little to differentiate itself in a crowded field of YA adaptations, leaving all but the least demanding viewers feeling dystopian déjà vu.

Despite its radical potential, it's disappointing to see this story fall back on what's considered typical teen stuff.

There's a lot that's confusing or poorly set up. That's a script problem, but also a lack of emotional direction and momentum.

The Darkest Minds is such a formulaic hodgepodge of secondhand plot points that it can't help but feel like an insult to its target demographic: just another case of adults trying to manipulate kids, this time by bilking them out of their allowance.

Even... rushing through a story better articulated in the book, the filmmakers demonstrate that neither they nor this adaptation can be easily written off.

Audience Reviews for The Darkest Minds

In a scene meant to show how self-aware it is, The Darkest Minds instead reiterates just how derivative it is of every other YA-spawned franchise that has come before it and in turn, how mundane it is by comparison. I mean, itï¿ 1/2(TM)s fine. And it proves that sometimes the destination can be better than the journey as the final moments pack more genuine emotion and heart than the entire movie up until that point. So, itï¿ 1/2(TM)s kinda completely whack, but at the same time makes the best of this combination of elements that youï¿ 1/2(TM)ve seen countless times before. I wonï¿ 1/2(TM)t remember it in two weeks, but hey-I was never bored. Take what you can get.
