It's very derivative...and takes a long time to get going. But it does just about get there, helped by attractive lead performances from Amandla Stenberg and Harris Dickinson and a refreshingly 'colour-blind' take on adolescent love.
Elevated by its dynamic leading lady Amandla Stenberg (with corkscrew curls & flawless complexion), the film effectively sucks us into its dystopian reality and keeps us engaged. In fact, the film is much more enjoyable than its elements might suggest.
Although the film's ending is relatively open-ended, [director Jennifer] Yuh Nelson's message of mobilization is an urgent message, specifically for a young audience, which it goes to great lengths to understand and serve.
THE DARKEST MINDS feels like it perhaps should have come out five years ago. However, it is one of the better examples of the many generic YA feature film adaptations that have hit theatres since 2008.
