Audience Reviews for The Deflowering of Eva Van End
This is a slight, quirky, comedy with a surreal bent. The Dutch director said he wanted to make a film with audience appeal between an Art Film and a more commercial movie. He succeeded in the balancing act; but the movie is not very good as a whole. There is a Dutch family where every member has serious problems that are not being tended to. A male German exchange student comes to stay with them for 2 weeks. The young, handsome German, manages to provide each family member exactly what they have been missing or longing for. Some scenes are well done and will make you smile. Others don't work very well. Eva is the youngest, and only daughter in the family. She is ignored by everyone else. She says very little. No one is listening anyway. Although she tells the family about the exchange student; when he finally arrives, it is a shock to everyone. The handsome German is a hit with the girls at the high school. Strangely, he does not try to lift Eva's social profile by sticking with her. Instead, after a brief meeting, he too, pretty much ignores her. The deflowering of the title is addressed toward the end. You won't miss much if you skip this movie altogether.
A light comical portrait of a family that's bewildered by the visit of a foreign exchange student from Germany. Somehow this handsome and positive young man confronts them with their shortcomings, hopes and dreams.
