See more Marco L @decatur555 2 days ago A weak but not empty exorcism drama that works better as family and social melodrama than as horror. The premise had potential: a damaged mother, poverty, social services, inherited wounds, religion, a haunted house and a strong cast led by Andra Day and Glenn Close. The best parts are the human ones, when Lee Daniels focuses on exhaustion, anger, children under pressure and a mother judged from every side. Andra Day gives the film rage and desperation, while Glenn Close is fully committed, even if her character often feels strangely written and close to caricature. The problem is that once demonic possession takes over, everything becomes familiar: voices, contorted bodies, prayers, screaming and predictable exorcism clichés. It rarely feels truly scary, and the melodrama often becomes too loud or ridiculous. There is a better film buried inside it, about family, faith, poverty and judgment, but the horror keeps dragging it toward something clumsy and forgettable. Lee Daniels is an AWFUL writer and director. I can only hold sympathy for Glenn Close, who had to deliver the infamous line ..
