Movie Info

Winning film of the National Film Institute's Operas Primas. Argentine-Chilean co-production, starring Paulina García, Claudio Rissi and Martín Slipak. The Bride of the Desert is the story of Teresa, a 54-year-old woman who works as a domestic employee in a family home in Buenos Aires. For decades he has taken refuge in the routine of his tasks but now, after the family decision to sell the house and after years of service, he is adrift. Without alternatives, he accepts a new job in the province of San Juan. Little friend of the trips leaves behind the city and its small safe world, to surrender without suspecting it, to the will of the unpredictable. In her first stop, the Sanctuary of the Difunta Correa, Teresa loses the bag in which she carries her only belongings. The unexpected accident will take her to cross the desert cuyano next to an unknown, the Gringo, its new companion of search. This hawker with his rickety pickup truck will be trimmed over the barren landscape as a threatening and attractive option. As the journey progresses and together they penetrate the different universes, this silent and opaque woman will slowly dye her color and life.

The wispy story could almost be reduced to an anecdote. Yet in the leisurely flow of Andrea Chignoli's edit, it's imbued with gorgeous, undulating rhythms that pull you in.

There's rather too much use of very shallow-focus camerawork (and yes, we get it that Teresa's world-view lacks a certain depth of field), but this is a minor quibble in a film that is a small delight, a perfect cinematic short story.

Sergio Armstrong's widescreen and often symmetrical cinematography frames the two in arresting and vivid ways, taking full advantage of the lonely streets of the town and the bleak, epic expanse of the surrounding desert.

A small story, told with simplicity... [Full review in Spanish]

It won't scorch the cinema, but this slight story of fragile connection is a charmer that locates heroism in a hesitant smile and dares to suggest that though you might have been diminished by disappointment in the past, what you are is still enough.

A gentle film of good intentions, which without much fuss, works within what it humbly proposes. [Full review in Spanish]
