At half its present length it might make an OK midnight camp item.

You don't care about any of the characters, so there's no fear of something nasty happening to them, and, with the exception of Pacino (who plays the devil himself), it's terribly miscast.

Pacino's gleeful performance notwithstanding, "The Devil's Advocate" descends into silly self-indulgence when it should have gone straight to hell.

You go in expecting a brazenly hokey, in-your-face portrait of evil, and that, I'm happy to say, is just what you get.

A fairly entertaining supernatural potboiler that finally bubbles over with a nearly operatic sense of absurdity and excess.

Jun 22, 2016Interesting adaptation of the traditional Faust story with a modern spin to it. Reeves plays a southern lawyer who can't seem to lose a case no matter how much the odds are against him and is recruited by a top firm in New York City. Pacino is amazing as John Milton, the leading partner of the NYC law firm. This has to be one of his better performances. He even manages to drag a good performance from Reeves.Patrick W Super Reviewer

Nov 07, 2014The Devil's Advocate is a seductive and stylistic thriller that's full of mystery and intrigue. When a gifted Florida trial lawyer is recruited by a New York City firm and groomed to be a partner, he discovers that success comes at a price and that it may be too high for him to live with. The cast is quite impressive and features Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, Connie Nielsen, and Craig T. Nelson. But it's Pacino who steals the film with his inspired and charismatic performance. There are however, some problems; the script in particular is confusion and uneven, having trouble integrating the supernatural elements into the plot. Yet James Newton Howard's score picks up a lot of the slack by setting a dark, mystical tone with sweeping themes. While The Devil's Advocate has some problems, it's also tantalizingly irresistible.Dann M Super Reviewer

Aug 15, 2011The Devil's advocate is a terrifying, well crafted Horror drama that is one of a few last good films starring Al Pacino. The film combines all sorts of elements into one film, and it's a refreshing take on the traditional horror film. I really enjoyed Al Pacino's performance here and Keanu Reeves, who usually is one dimensional in his acting abilities, gives a good performance as well. The film feels as if John Grisham and Stephen King would've collaborated on a film and this was the result. A good film with good acting, and an even better story. Al Pacino was definitely a wise choice to play the devil in this film and this is simply a well crafted film with creepy, horrifying elements to it. That makes all the difference. This is a well executed film, one that has plenty of chills and good story development. The film may miss the mark on few occasions, but for the most part, the film succeeds in being a work of pure entertainment that will most likely surprise viewers by Keanu Reeve's good performance. But like I said, Al Pacino really is the actor that delivers the goods on screen; he makes the role his own and steals every scene he's in. I think it's too bad that lately he hasn't done anything good, but Devil's Advocate is one of his last great performances. Devil's Advocate is a fine Motion Picture and is a truly entertaining Horror film that every fan of the genre must see. Truly eerie and atmospheric, Devil's Advocate is a film that will most likely make you sleep depraved for a little while.Alex r Super Reviewer
