Movie Info

In 1966, McKinley Nolan, a young man from Texas with a wife and son, joined the Army and was assigned to duty in Vietnam. In 1967, Nolan went AWOL and no one has been entirely certain of his whereabouts ever since. American intelligence believed that Nolan went into Cambodia and decided to fight alongside the Vietcong. Some said that he married a local woman and raised a family, others were convinced he died during the Khmer Rouge genocide under Pol Pot, while still others speculated he somehow slipped out of the country as American troops fled Vietnam. The fate of the missing American soldier remained a mystery when Dan Smith, an American veteran of the Vietnam war who still struggles with his memories of the carnage, saw a man he felt certain was Nolan during a visit to Vietnam. Teaming up with reporter Richard Linnett, who had been covering Nolan's case for years, Smith set out to discover once and for all what became of McKinley Nolan. Nolan's wife and brother joined Smith and Linnett in hopes of answering their own questions about a mystery that's haunted them for decades; filmmaker Henry Corra also tagged along, and the documentary The Disappearance of McKinley Nolan tells the story of the mysterious American soldier and the efforts to find where he might have gone and why. The Disappearance of McKinley Nolan was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
