If it feels like everyone's a tool in a script instead of an engaging person, that's because that's the case.

Arcand ends up overextending the crime-movie motif by trying to fashion a sedate tale about morality, which is an interesting premise, but this flatly acted heap of malaise doesn't do the idea justice.

There are bigger incongruities around the corner... that bury the film's credibility.
July 11, 2019
The Fall of the American Empire sets up, however halfheartedly, a classic premise about sex, greed and crime. Unfortunately, the film never gets us to care about the characters, who seem to only talk in plot points and themes.
July 8, 2019
There are some sweet moments in the film, and a couple of extremely violent ones, quite frankly, not enough to earn the film's R rating. But overall, the movie is just a question mark.

"The Fall of the American Empire" does only one thing well: fall apart. Gracelessly. Stupidly. And without a shred of self-awareness.
July 5, 2019
Long-winded, ineptly-plotted satire of broken Western Civilization and the capitalism that killed it.

Audiences (myself included) have an insatiable appetite for caper movies, but while trying to justify itself as a social critique, The Fall of the American Empire too often fizzles.
June 20, 2019
This often well-acted and intriguing blend of caper and commentary comes off as forced and heavy-handed, scoring obvious points without offering anything particularly new. Heck, there's even a hooker with a heart of gold.

[Director Denys] Arcand deserves some credit for going outside of his comfort zone. But he also has little clue how to make more salacious material equally scathing politically.
June 14, 2019
The tone and pacing remain flat for nearly the entire 2-hour 7-minute runtime.
June 7, 2019
The idea of a heist film featuring characters who are entirely too smart for their own good sounds amusing enough, but 'The Fall of the American Empire' is not that movie, nor is it much of anything else.
June 7, 2019
The plot ... is nearly as messy as Arcand's confused intentions.
June 6, 2019
Though jarringly violent at times, the film becomes a wash of low-keyed comic attitudes thrown into the works of a crime story.
June 5, 2019
When Pierre-Paul enjoys a gentle S&M scenario with Camille, while also quoting Plato's dialogues, "The Fall of the American Empire" reaches peak eyeroll-inducing wish fulfillment.
June 4, 2019
Politics and social commentary aside, we are left with a crime film. One that isn't very suspenseful or particularly clever.
May 31, 2019
An unbearably preachy post-financial-crisis civics lesson in heist movie drag.
May 31, 2019
The tacit thrust of Mr. Arcand's film is didactic, even polemic.
May 30, 2019
It's a chore to explore these questions with the hapless, high-minded Pierre-Paul, who talks down great writers and artists, and claims to be a genius but doesn't do much to convince us he actually is.
May 30, 2019
Despite a few undeniably intense and lurid moments, the film lacks the pulsating fury of a significant genre work.
