Not a memorable movie but it is a welcome return to the action genre for Chan and Brosnan after too long a time away.

"The Foreigner" doesn't blow the doors off the revenge-action model, but it does become one of the best recent old-guy-is-a-secret-badass movies.

There are a few twists and turns, double crosses and misdirections, but really it's a simple story of political intrigue blended with military-style action, and a higher emotional content than either of those genres normally feature.

The Foreigner is based on the 1992 novel, The Chinaman, and despite hackneyed attempts at updating the tale to the modern day, it feels very much like a piece of entertainment from 1992.

The film is pretty formulaic and Bond like, but it's fun to see Jackie Chan in action again. Can he do serious drama? That's affirmative.
September 2, 2019
Jackie Chan manages to offer a glimpse at his former glory in The Foreigner while unleashing an intricately performed fury that no one knew he was capable of.

Jackie Chan is much more emotionally engaged than we are used to see. [Full Review in Spanish]

Chan often feels like a visitor in his own film, and the script attempts some plot pirouettes that don't always flow gracefully. Yet overall, The Foreigner proves to be a respectable example of a thinking person's action flick.

Chan shows more pathos and subtlety than any role before, quietly commanding attention and giving so much with so little.

Chan commands the screen without saying a word, but the film gets lost in its dreary grays and sterile personality.

Action thriller with great twists and turns! The film is similar to others of the genre, but still effective.

[It] is a splendid, polished action thriller with brain and heart, and a marvelous pairing of two actors, Chan and Brosnan.

I feel confident saying that this was the most underrated movie of 2017 - if not only for Chan's dynamic performance. The tagline says it all: Never push a good man too far.
February 11, 2019
While there are a few sequences that offer some Chan-driven action highlights, The Foreigner spends more time on warmed-over political intrigue than you might have expected - much to its ultimate detriment.

The Foreigner is really two half-baked films rather than one complete feature.

Enjoyable enough, but The Foreigner carries a distinctly Beijing sheen at the expense of Vietnamese erasure.
November 8, 2018
I was hoping to see Chan given some fantastic dramatic material to work with, but he is basically a side plot, playing second fiddle to an uninteresting Brosnan.

Thankfully, an older and bruised Chan's lamenting and grappling Quan brings a poignant sense of emotional and edgy urgency to this tale of loss and tactical intimidation.

The Foreigner starts as a revenge story, but evolves into something more within the first 20 minutes. Hennessey's hunt to find the IRA bombers is introduced clumsily, but once started the film manages to spin the events into a satisfying mystery.

The Foreigner is an excellent political thriller in its own right that happens to not only be a Dad Action entry par excellence, but also brings us both Jackie Chan AND Pierce Brosnan squaring off against one another.
