The sea is forgotten until disaster strikes. But perhaps the biggest seagoing disaster is the global supply chain, which - maybe in a more fundamental way than financial speculation- leads the world economy to the abyss. The film follows container cargo aboard ships, barges, trains and trucks, listening to workers, engineers, planners, politicians, and those marginalized by the global transport system. By methodically exposing the physical impossibility of perpetual growth, the film reveals how absurdly self-defeating human and ecological exploitation through mechanization has become.
The longer this unfocused screed goes on, the thinner your patience wears.
[Displays] a good visual instinct for the sublimity, as well as the ugliness, of the industrial and postindustrial environments, and a patient and generous interest in what people have to say about their own lives.
At times as much a travelogue as it is an investigative portrait, [it] finds unexpected tributaries where mass transit has altered the life of the common worker, usually with negative results.
The strong point of this film is its spectacular imagery. The weak point (which for me tips the balance)... is its naïve, posturing Marxist commentary and insistence on its own profundity.
The filmmakers more or less show us in The Forgotten Space how the sea is capitalism's global trading floor writ large.
