Olnek is clearly a talented writer, and it's unfortunate for a film with such a promising premise that the one-liners and situational humor don't add up to more than the sum of their parts.

You can tell Monahan and Haas have a natural chemistry and comic rhythm.

Monahan's stand-up background shows through as she delivers many of the witty one-liners.

Merkins sends up both male-hustler movies (Midnight Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho in particular) and the upscale, conservative daughters of Gomorrah with unerring goofiness.

Merkins gets by on its considerable wit and a few genuinely hilarious moments for the first hour, then tries to play catch-up in the final 30 minutes by attempting to capitalize on marginal subplots.

While much of it is quite funny, the film ends up feeling like a good comedy sketch stretched out unnecessarily to a feature-length.

Behind its transgressive affectations, "The Foxy Merkins" is a sweet, playful divertissement.

The Foxy Merkins would have made an idiosyncratic and amusing short film; at 80 minutes, it's a one-joke comedy that quickly overstays its welcome.

This spritely low-budget sex comedy is essentially a parody of Midnight Cowboy, but the humor is cleverly absurd and self-aware.

Part John Waters, with a dash of Paul Morrisey and a whole lot of Sappho, this delirious comedy is the must see girl-on-girl comedy of the new millennium.

It feels like a filthy, extended episode of The Simpsons or similarly absurdity-minded prime time cartoon.

When The Foxy Merkins does hit it's stride, which is more often than not, the comedy reaches near-brilliance (Alex Karpovsky's fleeting cameo as a mumbling "foxy merkins" dealer is funny on so many levels).

The bright ideas begin to thin out, and the pic never quite recovers its footing.
