Critic Reviews for The German Doctor
Puenzo's initial premise is more promising, though, than her sensational tone.
This curious, surprisingly safe melodrama fictionalises the postwar life of brutal Nazi surgeon Josef Mengele.
Puenzo masterfully balances the film's thriller edge with disturbing details about Mengele's obsession with genetic experimentation, as well as the community of German expatriates in Argentina helping old Nazis elude arrest.
Puenzo has a knack for plumbing the heads and hearts of teenage girls. The director coaxes a mesmerizing, unmannered performance out of Bado, who is making her feature-film debut.
Audience Reviews for The German Doctor
Well-acted and directed, The German Doctor will be hard for many American audiences due to the foreign language. However, if you can get over that, you'll find some great performances, and a tight thriller to enjoy.
Argentina's Oscar submission, aka "Wakolda," benefits most from a superb performance by teen Florencia Bado.
How much is he charming and caring? How much is he manipulative and nefarious? The game of sorting and evaluating motivations wends through a reasonably effective historical drama anchored by strong performances from Alex Brendemühl as Mengele and Florencia Bado as the girl, Lilith. (We also get a bit of gorgeous Argentine scenery.)
