The Golden Blade Reviews

The Golden Blade is a disappointing film. It is about a Basra merchant who avenges his father's murder. Rock Hudson and Piper Laurie give horrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Nathan Juran did a terrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

To be honest, the acting is not great, but this still remains an exciting technicolor adventure film with an excellent cast including Universal International's new (at the time) radiant red-headed star Piper Laurie. And of course Rock Hudson, George Macready, and Gene Evans are featured, but unfortunately in "brown face". This movie also includes an uncredited appearance by a young Anita Ekberg! Her one bit of dialogue in the movie was actually dubbed due to the fact she couldn't yet speak good English. George Macready's acting in this films seems a little bit forced and overly passionate. Rock Hudson is great though, as he always was in these early adventure films Universal International put out during the 50's.

More Hollywood "Arabian" nonsense, this time with Rock (born in Illinois) Hudson and Piper (born in Michigan) Laurie as a son and a daughter respectively of the endless shifting sands of the desert, where the blessings of Allah, the careless hand of Fate, and the fickle temptations of the heart weave their spell of awe and magic! There's horse chases, harem dancing (oolala!), and some borrowing of ye olde Arthurian legend here, and there's some fun too, despite the long ears on this donkey.

Another great early-career performance from Piper Laurie. This was her second film with Rock Hudson. Looking back at her career, I realized she has worked with just about everybody who is considered 'elite' in old-school Hollywood. Can't wait to meet her, and hopefully ask her about it, at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Hunt Valley, Md., this September. http://midatlanticnostalgiaconvention.com/

It looks lovely with the Technicolor but it's totally dopey.

Very colorful nonsense is a fun ride but completely ridiculous. One of five films Rock did the year before he broke through to the top flight of stars and left this sort of fodder behind. Piper Laurie is beautiful and her clothes amazing, the fact that she was able to move beyond this kind of cinematic junk food and become an esteemed actress is a testament to her talent.
