John R @RT91501528 1d The Gorge has a plot that simultaneously is original in premise (its setting and starting point) but cliched in terms of who are the bad guys and what is their motivation. Miles Taylor and Anya Taylor-Joy turn in excellent performances. Sigourney Weaver does the best she can with a one-dimensional character. The design of the appearance of the "monsters" is good but reminiscent of some others. The intellectual capacity of the "monsters" is uneven, but I think that is intentional and reasonably explained. The fighting skills of the "monsters" seem somewhat implausibly deficient and unlucky. See more The Phoenix P @RT51946849 4d The Gorge kicks off with a premise and tone that could’ve been pulled from a Stephen King novel, wrapping a magnanimous mystery in sinister intrigue. From there, we’re treated to a surprisingly engaging meet-cute between Teller’s Levi and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Drasa, creating a clash of genres that, initially, is slick, mixing a heat into its creepy chills. After a burst of action and CGI creature feature that I can only describe as The Thing meets The Last of Us, The Gorge kinda tumbles towards its conclusion. Its confident, ominous opening and the Taylor Swift song romance can’t quite hide how aimless it is in its second half. This uncertainty sends its tower of contrasting genres tumbling into tonal and thematic chaos. Action is well-paced enough to keep the viewer’s attention and solid performances from its protagonists allow some development to take hold, but, at over 2 hours, everything wears thin by the end. See more Bow E @CriticElliott Aug 15 A translucent film unwilling to deny the sci-fi spectacle it is, allowing a romance to unfold without losing its action-driven thriller. The Gorge captures both the apocalyptic rift carved into the earth and the romance between two highly skilled operatives willing to cross any line to be together. Both Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy sustain an undeniable chemistry on stage and the overall acting was very attractive. The cinematography is well brought out in the film, showcasing the beauty of a hill side landscape and the horror of a misty gorge filled with secrets alongside it. But the film does lack technical accuracy, making it difficult to believing the premise of it. Anyone who enjoys a good thriller and doesn’t mind a bit of sci-fi action will love the Gorge. It’s especially good for a date night film as the romantic side of it shifts it into the drama category and the misty secretes keeps the tension alive, just like a first date might feel.
