"Times have changed." It's an elemental Wes Anderson lament...

Discerning travellers and Wes Anderson fans will luxuriate in the glorious Mittel-European kitsch of one of the director's funniest and most exquisitely designed movies in years.

Just plain fun, full of the filmmaker's signature flourishes and curlicues, worked out with skill and finesse.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" is not his grandest work yet, but it is one worth an extended stay.
January 2, 2015 | Rating: 8.2/10 | Full Review… -
The mannered, madcap proceedings are often delightful, occasionally silly, and here and there, gruesome and/or heartbreaking.

This is a visually stunning film, but above all it's a hugely enjoyable one.

Mar 29, 2016This is a very funny movie. Wes Anderson is really good at making these very different films that people are just captured by. This movie just proves that his talent is really unlimited. Ralph Fiennes is brilliant in this movie, but then again he always is. Then again, his performance in this movie really brought his career to a new point, because he really is a dramatic actor as seen in movies like "Schindler's List" and "The English Patient." The fact that he can do a performance like this, which is basically a comedic performance, is just once again proving why he is one of the greatest actors in Hollywood. He has beautiful chemistry with the young Tony Revolori who is also very good in this movie.Lasse G Super Reviewer

Feb 29, 2016A host of comic book characters in typical Wes Anderson style set in a fantasy country not unlike Eastern Europe in a fantasy time not unlike the 1930s with pretty and playful cinematography not unlike a Jeunet movie. Another tour de force by Ralph Fiennes, the sophisticated hotel proprietor dedicated to bringing civilisation to the uncouth "modern" age.Ross C Super Reviewer

Oct 08, 2015The Grand Budapest Hotel did not have many laugh out loud moments; rarely did I more than grin or chuckle. But I was laughing on the inside and found the film very enjoyable to the extent that I was wishing I had not returned the DVD because I wanted to watch it again [which I have since first writing this review]. Something about it is very Oscar Wilde, aesthetic and witty.Robert B Super Reviewer

Jul 26, 2015Wes Anderson's delightfully quirky, visually striking, surrealistic comedy about Gustave H, played marvelously by Ralph Fiennes, with a dead-pan comic seriousness, who is a perfectionist concierge of this famous and luxurious hotel. Pleasing his customers is his number one priority, even if that means having sex with the aging doyennes. Then there is Gustave H's adoring and trusty sidekick, Zero, the lobby boy, wonderfully played by young Tony Revolori, in a scene-stealing performance, he is a stoic and observant pupil, whose painted on pencil mustache suggests that perhaps he shares some of his mentor's rarefied tastes. Soon mayhem will hit the grand hotel in the form of murder, revenge and a sinister dark plot. Brilliant direction by Wes Anderson, with terrific supporting performances by F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amairic, Adrien Brody, Williem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Kietel, Jude Law, Billy Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, and Tom Wilkinson. Impressive cinematography by Robert D. Yeoman, and a sensational score by Alexandre Desplat. An absurdly funny and original madcap comedy. Winner of 4 Academy Awards including Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. Highly Recommended.Danny R Super Reviewer
