Really this is all about Everett, who tried to get the film made for many years and, it must be said, considers himself something of an Oscar Wilde-type figure offscreen.

Everett's direction is full of beautiful surfaces and witty lines, but there's not much beneath them.

In the role of his career and his directing debut, Rupert Everett shines brightly as the troubled literary genius, Oscar Wilde during his final years.

Actor Rupert Everett's mistitled The Happy Prince marks his debut as a film director, and the subject matter is clearly close to his heart.

This respectful ode may feel more like a lurid slog, but one that will stay with you long after the vivacious rogue draws his final breath.

Everett captures much of this, if necessarily in cinematic shorthand... Yet it's exactly Wilde's penchant for self-destruction that Everett doesn't pursue enough.

A bleak film that nevertheless brims with the spirit and cheek of Wilde himself, Everett is here revealed as the man best suited to telling this particular tale.

It's an interesting, more sober counterpoint to 1997's Stephen Fry starring Wilde, but Happy Prince feels like more of a slog than it should be.

Astonishing for a first film...

Rupert Everett is a tour de force... being so involved on all levels must have required superhuman amounts of energy.

Everett is writer, director and star, delivering an assured piece of storytelling which is bleakly funny and numbingly sad. His Wilde is a master of self-deception after years shining a satirical light on society; and of course a wit to the bitter end.

Despite everything, however, Everett tells an important story about a wild man born too soon.

Everett the writer sometimes overplays things, while Everett the director lurches from one martyrdom to the next in a sort of pity-party promenade. But Everett the actor, in a role he was born to play, never makes a false move.

The Happy Prince is an unapologetic character study, one that breaks through Wilde's façade to reveal a man in turmoil, aware of his flaws, but unable to help himself.

Rupert Everett wrote, directed and stars in this charismatic portrait of Oscar Wilde during his bitter last years.

What remains is courage and wit, and a resolve not to give in to the hypocrisy of the era despite the enormous personal cost.

The Happy Prince is a tragic masterpiece. Here Everett has given himself the role of a lifetime, and in it he succeeds magnificently.

Everett's towering performance as Wilde is mesmerizing. Often shot in extreme close-up, we see every millimeter of his dissipation, but also every glimmer of stubborn, ironic wit.

Even though it is very much a film about terminal illness and coming to terms with one's mortality, Everett has made the kind of warts-and-all portrait that matches ambition with a beguiling empathy.

You see the enormous loss, but more than that, the deflating ugliness of this world etched on Everett's face, echoing in his every gesture.
