There's no denying the love put into this craft, but the end result feels basic, bland, safe, and intended for Rupert Everett himself more than any audience

A lugubrious slog... We never get a good sense of who Wilde was; it's just a recitation of events.

Despite its undercurrent of anger at Wilde's mistreatment by fashionable English society, the film feels like a vanity production...

Everett finds a less fascinating avenue into the vagabond's tragic life. At least it looks gorgeous.

Because of the lack of depth in supporting characters and half-baked writing, this movie couldn't have ended fast enough.

Everett tips the movie over into ridiculousness when he starts making barely veiled allusions to Wilde as a Christ-like figure. I don't know if it's hilarious or unnerving to think that Everett must think of himself that way too.

It's well crafted and compelling at times thanks mostly to the casts' efforts, but there is an emptiness that permeates through the film as if a significant piece of Wilde's demise is missing.

It's just a shame that ultimately this story and its action start to meander, rather than punching home.

It's a performance worth indulging, even if, on the whole, Everett's impassioned project isn't.

There's nothing happy here.
January 22, 2018
He's a strikingly tragic creature, but "The Happy Prince" struggles to say much more about that conundrum, leaving one to contemplate the potential had [Oscar] Wilde emerged from retirement to fill in the blanks.

An absorbing but shapeless bio-drama that never gains much steam.
