The film congratulates itself on its compassion, but for us the facile, overbearing, suffocating niceness only produces fatigue.

despite winning performances from both Bolasko and Igawa, the saintly Kakuro's immediate and abiding attraction to this blankly grumpy figure is never made credible.

As with Submarine, The Hedgehog proves that Rushmore's influence has now completely spread across the Atlantic.

The emotional manipulation gets irritating though, and the characters seem more archetypal than real. They exist merely to prove a point.

[VIDEO] At best, "The Hedgehog" seems like half a decent idea for a movie. At worst, it comes across as a severely unfinished narrative begging for some stiff editorial direction.

The fate of a goldfish provides a subplot in a film strong on tender characterisation and rather wishful about the remedies for loneliness.

Plays like a Gallic version of a Sundance flick, complete with on-the-nose references ... and just enough offbeat touches to make it seem more deep than it actually is.

Never heavy handed or melodramatic, [The Hedgehog] wisely allows the humour and drama on display to flow naturally and steadily.

The Hegdehog is an intimate and uniquely told parable about the importance of scratching the rough surface of life for the chance of discovering the hidden gems beneath.

As oddball as the creature that inspired it, The Hedgehog warms the heart with its prickly tale.

This a movie with such a light, stylish touch, it makes no claims to profundity and is a sweetly hopeful experience.

Making her feature-length film debut, Mona Achache displays a fearlessness in her approach to a multi-tiered character study with psychological and existential overtones, all set within the confines of what amounts to a single-setting chamber piece.

Subtly changing the [novel's] darker tone, [t]he almost-too-sweet film's emotional climax arrives with a simple hug [as] a transforming human connection.
