This is the kind of thoughtful, confident and seamlessly integrated filmmaking that comes from an uncommon fusion of artist and subject ...
McDonald isn't seeking to make explosive drama about a human time bomb, preferring to show the many mood swings of real life.
Dark and sometimes tender, The Husband is the grim, realistic flip side of a what if - what if Notes on a Scandal focused solely on the drudgery of the husband's life in the wake of the betrayal?
McCabe-Lokos wrote the script for this stripped-down piece of psychological suspense that gets to the bony heart of love. And to his credit, he doesn't mind looking unsympathetic and cruel, even completely irresponsible.
...a sporadically compelling yet thoroughly underwhelming little drama...
If you find yourself in the mood for a black comedy about a guy who is definitely worse off than you are right now, The Husband is that guy.
McDonald didn't receive the acclaim that he should have for directing an evolving Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, often unsuccessfully through emotions he must bare following a crime committed by his wife that lands her in jail. An ordinary man tires to deal with extraordinary circumstances.
