The Hustle's stars might make an effective comedy team in a different setting, but this gender-flipped remake of a remake adds little beyond its feminine twist. Read critic reviews

Feb 14, 2020In the pantheon of bad ideas remaking Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which itself was a remake) ranks high, yet Rebel Wilson and Ann Hathaway attempt it in The Hustle. When a small time con woman gets taken by a pro she makes a deal to team up and learn her tricks, but they soon end up in a contest to see who's the better con artist. Half of the problem is Hathaway, who doesn't have any charm or likability. The other half is that the jokes just aren't that funny; relaying on a lot of sexual and gross out humor (which is Wilson's shtick). Still, the sight gags and pratfalls work pretty well and deliver some good laughs. Coming off as a bad imitation, The Hustle isn't fooling anyone.

Aug 25, 2019Normally, I really like Anne Hathaway. Especially recently. But not only did I think The Hustle was pretty bad, even she specifically was pretty bad in it.

Aug 23, 2019Flipping to female con artists, this remake is almost scene to scene like the Martin/Caine pairing. Wilson and Hathaway are good together and it has laughs but breaks no new ground and is pale in comparison. Not a bad rental! 08-22-2019

Aug 09, 2019The comic thrust of this remake of a remake (see: "Bedtime Story" and/or "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels") involves our main characters ability to impersonate accents different from their own. Neither Hathaway or Wilson is too proficient in this regard in this story about two hustlers competing with one another in the French Riviera. Here is a low-aiming, light-hearted comedy that will not put you out much, but is doubtful you'll think about much either.
