Thomas V @TomVee 2 days ago This is period melodrama, but it's very well crafted, like all of James Gray's previous work. And for once, Joaquin Phoenix is not the focal point. Not that he isn't wonderful, because he does a great job portraying a thoroughly unlikable character, but because this is Marion Cotillard's movie. Her performance is a thing of beauty, understated but shaded, conveying deep sadness, apprehension, hatred and resolve, saying more with her eyes than any of her lines. She elevates the picture from melodrama to something deeper and more compelling. The characters are desperate but are not defined by their pain and sorrow. It has genuine things to say, but never turns those ideas into obvious pronouncements about the perils of the "American Dream". Cotillard, Phoenix, and Renner all do some of their best work here and Gray just directs the hell out of the whole thing. See more isla s @RT89656869 Sep 3, 2022 I thought this was quite an atmospheric film, with a somewhat chilling performance from Joaquin Phoenix as Bruno. Its quite a gritty film. I found myself feeling quite sorry for the main character and I admired her ability to try to defend herself. Its a film about trickery, manipulation and exploitation of desperation, hence it being a somewhat sobering watch, certainly in part. I liked the setting - NYC in the early 1900s. I also enjoyed seeing the coreographed theatre sequences and the music played (piano et al.). There is one particularly tense scene. This is quite a good drama film that I'd recommend to others. It's a slow, sad character story, and in that vein, it was pretty well done, but it was just a little too bleak and dreary for me to enjoy.
