As documentaries go, Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is mostly pabulum, material that has appeared in books and podcasts since Holmes's ludicrous medical start-up, Theranos, imploded three years ago.

This documentary has all the makings of an engaging thriller: maverick protagonist on a seemingly noble mission, influential figures and human fallout. But it lacks pace...the story is serious, but it could have been told with a lighter touch.

Like most any Alex Gibney film, this one is sleek, well-produced, focused and journalistic. But The Inventor, given the Gibney-perfect subject, is a little surprising in its softness. As competent as it is, the film just doesn't bite very hard.

Gibney finds himself unable to show why Holmes was such a compelling figure. Instead, the viewer is lost in an endless maze of dry re-enactments and footage from Theranos promos and interviews.

Compared to Gibney's previous attack docs, "The Inventor" is more of a second-degree assault, scoring a few direct hits and a fair amount of whiffing at what proves to be a vaporous target.
