VHS video tapes, purchased at a storage auction in Florida, contain three episodes of a Los Angeles public access talk show and numerous reels of behind-the-scenes footage. There are tapes from TV news reports that tell the story of a man who called himself "Jesus" and tried to spread a message of peace, love, hope and forgiveness, but was largely ignored and ridiculed by the media. After the first show is broadcast, public outcry creates a media frenzy and demands are made to stop airing the program. Religious leaders condemn "Jesus," sponsors threaten to boycott the station, atheists demand the government shut it down, and, feeling pressure from all sides, the station forbids any more "Jesus" interviews. The interviews profoundly affect the host, who alternately believes and disbelieves his guest, ultimately falling in and out of faith. In the second and third shows he probes deeper into Biblical teachings, the meaning of life and salvation. Bad publicity and a suspicious fire closes his non-profit acting school, and the broke and despondent host leaves Hollywood, retires to Florida, ultimately writes a best-selling book about Jesus, disappears, and is rumored to have committed suicide. In the end, he is tracked down by a female television journalist who confronts him on camera about the truth behind The Jesus Tapes and he reluctantly answers her questions.
