This has far, far too many soliloquies... The material itself isn't worthy of it.
April 30, 2019
The Kid follows an unusual narrative structure, lollygagging from one setting to another, and taking far too long to make its point.

Stimulating but hardly enduring. [Full review in Spanish]

The Kid feels alternatively rushed and too slow - short on characterization and motivation but dense with meaningless, trite conversations that try and fail to say something interesting about trauma.

What comes from this casting are some questionable scenes where acting was not on par with other performances in the film. Had some other actors been cast, the film could have come off stronger but instead felt stunted and off in several scenes.
March 8, 2019
The Kid ends up shooting itself in the foot with a screenplay mired in clichés, and none of the characters or performances seems to gel.

It succeeds sporadically as a corrective anti-myth, but as a story about people, it fails to come to life.

"The Kid" manages some picturesque shots of Western landscapes, and Hawke, who has hit a career stride in recent years, wouldn't know how to turn in a bad performance if he tried. But there's not enough here to make this journey worth taking.

Simultaneously wants to humanize and mythologize its cowboys - and neither effort works.
March 8, 2019
An excellent cast rides through some predictable paces.
March 8, 2019
It strives for the depth of 'Unforgiven,' but falls considerably short of that standard...an example of a clever premise foiled by self-indulgent execution.
March 8, 2019
This relegation of female characters to the sidelines is depressing for a film released in 2019, especially because it seems entirely possible to have a film looking at masculinity without reducing women to archetypes.
March 8, 2019
The Kid is a well-intentioned attempt to make a contemplative western, but ultimately mistakes gritty violence and broodiness for substance.
March 8, 2019
Its scenes wildly escalate to a fever pitch at the drop of a hat, before then ending, more often than not, with abrupt violence.
March 8, 2019
The script is laden with painfully outdated representations and vacillates between snooze-inducing speechifying and bare-bones storytelling that doesn't elucidate a damn thing
March 7, 2019
This effort from D'Onofrio is undeniably well made. It just simply comes off as unexceptional and never rouses you from a low gear.
March 7, 2019
The problem with "The Kid" is that the relationship between Rio and Billy never feels authentic, kindred spirits in a cruel world, feels like a Screenwriting 101 exercise, rather than an organic part of the story.
March 7, 2019
"The Kid" often struggles to find its footing.
March 7, 2019
A weak script, patchy editing, and uneven performances take the gunpowder out of the bullets. What should be a gritty coming of age tale ends up boring and forgettable.
March 7, 2019
The directorial debut of actor Vincent D'Onofrio is a loud, abrasive exercise that bludgeons the viewer rather than entertains.
