So vast it often strains to make connections, but its form-an intricate intersecting montage, a flashcard bombardment of images and clips-keeps the film chugging along, just like Elvis Presley's 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly when Eugene Jarecki's one-of-a-kind doc on the rise and fall of Elvis turns into a metaphor for Trump's America, but when it happens - kapow!

[The film is] a biographical study that achieves the noteworthy result of contextualizing one of the most famous and well-documented American lives in an entirely new and relevant way.

... a sometimes fun, occasionally provocative, and mostly disjointed mess.

What carries us through this mad experiment is a sense of commonality through the oral tradition, a reminder that Elvis's story is one of our shared myths.
June 21, 2018
A rambling, lively, high-IQ cinematic essay.

For as well-intentioned as Jarecki may be, The King starts with a conclusion and works backward from there, and the results are more than a little tenuous.

Perceptive, probing and ultimately devastating, The King is for anyone who cares about where this country has been and where it's headed.

The journey is the destination in a movie that gives you plenty to think about and argue with, as it racks up the miles and people clamber in and out of both the Rolls and the movie.

The overall merging of the two stories offers deeper insight into the fall of both the King and the country as a whole.

What could have been a gentle, personal travelogue is reworked and reworked until it's often guilty of the last sin of Elvis - excess.

Its dubious assertions and utter lack of empathy for its subject and his milieu, all The King ends up doing is further cloud our understanding of [Elvis Presley].

A moving masterpiece of music, pop cultural montage and Big American Metaphor

I'd probably love this film's wandering spirit and Elvis-is-everywhere philosophizing if it were half as fast or twice as long, if it pinned any thought down long enough to really TCB.

The King benefits from a quality that's usually a liability in nonfiction films: Its scattershot structure gets at the truth of pop culture as an ineffable chimera that defines much of the world.

Like the director's other projects, this is intelligent and ambitious, but the cultural insights are too familiar to merit yet another trek through Presley's troubled life.

Now we get to wrestle with The King, a Rorschach test of a documentary that bombards the viewer with wildly conflicting takes on the meaning of Elvis Presley in American life.

Two elements - America and Elvis - come together in ticklish, surprising ways that expand and delight your perceptions.
May 26, 2017
Big, bold and overreaching, in love with but also skeptical of its own central metaphor of Elvis' career as a version of America's own history.
May 24, 2017
That's the most accurate picture of America that this American can imagine: a land of competing narratives, where the only thing everyone can agree on is that lots of stuff has gone wrong, even if we can't agree on exactly what that stuff is.
