It's all rather random, but never dull.

Jarecki's road-trip never reaches answers or a destination, but it's a curiously diverting ride.

The King is a visual essay - it proposes a thesis, then builds a convincing argument, bouncing between Presley's life and the state of the nation.

You'll be intrigued. You will not be bored. But you probably won't be convinced.

A quietly revolutionary music documentary: one that assesses the changing face of a nation via the enduring legacy of one man, adding newfound depth to long established facts.

The finished film does manage to throw up some interesting ideas as various interviewees... wrestle with notions of cultural appropriation while others reflect on what Elvis's gluttonous career says about America.

Just when we thought it was impossible to say something new about Elvis Presley, documentary film-maker Eugene Jarecki pulls it off...

The King is exhilarating because it doesn't do "truth". It does Tom Wolfe-style free association and play of ideas, of which surely the best is that the King was King Kong reborn.

...uses Elvis as the backdrop for an entertaining if disheartening state of the union address of sorts.

The insistence may inspire a furrowed brow here, a rolled eye there, and a shaken fist or knowing nod over yonder, but there's enough earnest comment and good music to make the effort worth seeing and chewing over.

It's safe, I think, to say few filmmakers are visionary enough to conceive of a project this ambitious, much less pull it off.

A fitting film to have Errol Morris, Steven Soderbergh and Roseanne Cash as executive producers: a slippery discourse about music, meaning and moment seen through the figure of one of the great tricksters of "strange old America."

The difference: Much of The King proves interesting and some [of] it, even salient. That's because The King is as much about the kingdom as it is about Elvis's pop-cultural royalty.
