Even as the left-hand path of the editing bay weaves a satisfying tonal dissonance, the filmmakers still end up stepping on their own feet.

As effective a mirror as Presley might be for modern America, The King's revelations are rote, best suited for middle-school American Studies classes and Rolls-Royce fetishists.

There isn't a whole lot there that we haven't already eaten and digested a few times over. It's far more interesting to look forward... Elvis is really dead, and it's time to let him go.

For as well-intentioned as Jarecki may be, The King starts with a conclusion and works backward from there, and the results are more than a little tenuous.

Indulging Jarecki's lazy metaphor is the sole reason this film exists.

An ambitious state-of-the-nation vehicle that sometimes veers off-course.

I'd probably love this film's wandering spirit and Elvis-is-everywhere philosophizing if it were half as fast or twice as long, if it pinned any thought down long enough to really TCB.
June 28, 2018
With an insistence that borders almost comically on obsession, [director Eugene Jarecki] forces the singer's life into a larger theory of national decline-the American dream is dead, and Elvis is the emblem of its passing.
June 28, 2018
Pushes metaphoric parallels between life of Elvis and American exceptionalism as far as his 1962 Rolls-Royce can go. Car and doc break down...Insight gets drowned out .

The King is a workmanlike documentary about the late Elvis Presley, but struggles to find anything new to say about the much-raked-over rock 'n' roll legend.

No matter how hard he tries to connect the dots, however, the analogy remains as stretched as Elvis' late-career stage clothes.
June 26, 2018
...the movie does so in painfully simplistic terms, with encyclopedia-style snippets of history, authentically pained but insubstantial musings on "how we got here," and an odd reliance on the comments of celebrities who lack any Presley connection...
July 15, 2018
Or rather a tale of two cons. A doc that could have benefited from both a less worshipful title and portrayal, and likewise compromised by a facade of pandering even handedness dubiously tossing together Elvis with the equally fraudulent American Dream.
July 11, 2018
A metaphor in search of a movie, it's an incoherent chop suey of big ideas and overfamiliar biography, positioning Elvis as a representation of everything and nothing all at once.
June 22, 2018
... a sometimes fun, occasionally provocative, and mostly disjointed mess.
May 21, 2017
Even if one agrees with Jarecki's progressive political position, making Elvis into a metonym for the nation's spiritual corruption starts to feel too much like a contrived rhetorical sleight of hand.
June 20, 2018
Its dubious assertions and utter lack of empathy for its subject and his milieu, all The King ends up doing is further cloud our understanding of [Elvis Presley].
August 2, 2018
The new doc includes too many generic shots of aircraft carriers, skyscrapers, and other totems of power.
June 20, 2018
What could have been a gentle, personal travelogue is reworked and reworked until it's often guilty of the last sin of Elvis - excess.

Jarecki's after the big picture, and that's part of the problem.
