I half-expected every scene to end with a freeze-frame high five or the women yelling "girl power."
August 12, 2019
"The Kitchen" is chock-full of rousing girl-power lines with a trio of actresses that can deliver them with panache, but one wishes the story could back up the characters with more than just firepower.
August 10, 2019
The direction is flat (actors taking turns speaking their lines instead of actually conversing, etc.), the characterization baffling, the plot mechanics incredible - as in, not to be believed.

There's not enough heat in this Kitchen, but there's nothing cool about it, either.

McCarthy, Haddish, Moss-Oh, what a movie The Kitchen could have been. But oh what an unholy disaster it is. An early contender for worst of the year.

I spent most of the running time wondering if the film had been hastily reedited, or cut down from a more sprawling length-anything to explain the chaos playing out on-screen.

I wanted to love this movie from the start but it could not stick the landing.

Wastes a talented cast, as well as a premise that starts off promising but then goes off the rails quickly.

To quote everyone's favorite uncle, with great power comes great responsibility, and we see none of that in The Kitchen.
August 16, 2019
It's enjoyable overall if, instead of picking apart the cringe-worthy dialogue, you opt to bask in the blood-red glow of antiheroines unapologetically carving out their own spaces in a man's world.

There's just an agreeable verve to [Berloff's] direction, even if she has a tendency to paint with much too broad a brush, overstating her themes even when the action often speaks for itself.

The result is a dish where the ingredients put together in "The Kitchen" simply don't come together into a satisfying or appetizing whole. (Full Content Review for Parents - Violence, Profanity, Sex, etc. - also Available)

Another "Widows" type film that is saved by the brash performance by Tiffany Haddish. McCarthy and Moss are also good but they stand in her shadow.

As a writer, first-time director Andrea Berloff has a track record for solid, if unremarkable, adaptations and gritty true-life tales. Her take on the comic is, unfortunately, just clunky.
August 14, 2019
The Kitchen has so many male constructs sewn into its inseam, Berloff doesn't have a lot of room to move. It's a man's cut, yet she makes it comfortable by wearing it all a size too large, boyfriend style.

Despite its feminist themes, this comic book adaptation doesn't have much going for it. [Full Review in Spanish]

The Kitchen is like a high school junior's attempt at writing a gangster movie after being influenced by one too many, making this incapable of having an identity of its own.
August 14, 2019
Coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb, the conclusion feels like an incredible opportunity wasted as it abruptly and underwhelmingly ends... this setup deserved more.
August 13, 2019
The movie has no idea how to be a movie. It has no interest in characterization... we know nothing about these women, or really, any of the characters in the whole movie.
August 13, 2019
It honestly doesn't matter if you can stand the heat or not - you'll want to get out of The Kitchen.
