Not only does the Kitchen romanticize the good old days when paying mobsters used to mean something, but it makes McCarthy and her friends' rise to power it all too easy.

The problem with it is that it's incredibly unbalanced in the way that it doesn't ever know how to exactly deal with the sort of the tougher subject matter, the violence, which it deals with.

[T]he women's rise isn't granted weighty consideration or much soul-searching and too often they seem like mere mouthpieces for the feminist message.

Based on a comic-book series, it feels formulaic, unconvincing and disappointing.

Moss, somehow, retains her dignity but McCarthy and Haddish are made to look like amateurs. I'm a fan of both women. Get me outta this kitchen.

Even with a few decent set-pieces and exceptional acting from the ensemble, The Kitchen is not the adaptation we deserve.

Great cast, awful film.

The Kitchen is nice to look at but structurally and tonally unsound, and so clumsily are the post me#too politics retrospectively applied that it doesn't feel like we're in the 1970s at all. Gleeson is terrific, though.

Unfortunately, writer Andrea Berloff, who has the successful hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton (2015) on her credits, and here makes her directorial debut, rather lets down her classy cast.

[A] thuddingly inept crime picture.
September 20, 2019
It's a tonal mess, occasionally parody-poor (a hilarious amount of deadpan funeral scenes) and frequently makes no sense, especially when Moss's mousy Claire becomes a bloodthirsty killing machine.

If the message of equality in this movie is "women can be s****y too", then it's not lost, but topped with one that says "So can these movies". Poor.

[Andrea] Berloff misses the chance to use both suspense and humour to grapple with the sexual politics of the late-70s.
September 20, 2019
The shallowness of the depiction would matter less if the story made a modicum of sense.

Everyone tries. Unfortunately, the leads appear to believe they're in three very different films.
September 18, 2019
A missed opportunity, 'The Kitchen' ends up half-cooked and bland.
September 16, 2019
The Kitchen dips between gruesome gangster flick and a cartoony comic-book action, unsure whether to offer violence for entertainment purposes or as a sombre portrayal of gang warfare.
September 16, 2019
The Kitchen flits through scenes, coming across as its own trailer rather than a full movie. And it makes disappointing use of its great components, wasting three chewy, thoughtful core performances.
September 12, 2019
The film felt like studio executives decided to make a stereotypical mob film just replacing the men with women. The characters' motivations and actions were unearned and unreal. And each scene had a different tone. The actors seemed lost.
September 10, 2019
The Kitchen is a flawed project with thin characters, sloppy direction, jumbled storytelling, a confused message, and horrific editing. Considering the talent involved, it is a major disappointment.
